How to Select Your Light Rail Fare

Cash Fare Customers

Purchase Light Rail tickets at Ticket Vending Machines located at Light Rail stations before boarding. The Ticket Vending Machines are programmed to automatically calculate the correct cash fare based on the information you select.

Monthly Pass Customers

Local: Select either an AB, BC or CD local pass at the time of purchase, depending on your primary travel pattern. If you do not select one of these options, you will automatically receive the Local AB pass.

Local Monthly Pass Holders: On some occasions, your trips will take you to a different zone than the ones indicated on your pass. In these instances, you must obtain a Boarding Pass or an Upgrade ticket prior to boarding at one of the Ticket Vending Machines located at Light Rail stations.

Express: Express monthly passes are valid for travel in three fare zones. Select an ABC or BCD express pass at the time of purchase, depending on your primary travel pattern. If you do not select one of these options, you will automatically receive an Express ABC pass.

Regional: Regional monthly passes are valid for travel in all zones.

Monthly passes may be purchased on this website, at RTD-Denver.com, by mail and at all RTD sales outlets. Select Safeway and King Soopers stores will sell Local AB, BC or CD, Express ABC, BCD and Regional passes.

Local Pass Customers

Two-Zone Travel to an Adjacent Zone Not Listed on Your Local Pass: A FREE Light Rail Boarding Pass (valid for 90 minutes) must be obtained at the Ticket Vending Machine located at the light rail station if you will be traveling to an adjacent zone. You must also obtain a FREE zone receipt for your return trip.

For example, if you are a Local AB pass holder and decide to travel from Zone B to Zone C (Or, if you are a Local BC pass holder and need to travel from Zone B to Zone A), you must obtain a FREE zone receipt. When travel takes places in a maximum of two zones, it is considered local travel.

Both your zone receipt and Local monthly pass should be shown to the Fare Inspector.

Express Pass Customers

Three-Zone travel to an adjacent Zone not listed on your Express Pass: A FREE Light Rail Boarding Pass (valid for 90 minutes) must be obtained at the Ticket Vending Machine located at the light rail station if you will be traveling to an adjacent zone. You must also obtain a FREE boarding pass for your return trip.

For example, if you are an Express ABC pass holder and decide to travel from Zone C to Zone D (Or, if you are a Local BCD pass holder and need to travel from Zone B to Zone A), you must obtain a FREE boarding pass as long as you only travel in a maximum of three zones.

Both your Boarding Pass and Express monthly pass should be shown to the Fare Inspector.

Travel in More Zones than indicated on a Local or Express Pass : An Upgrade is needed when a local pass holder travels in more than two zones and an express pass holder travels in more than three zones.

For example, if a Local AB pass holder starts travel from Zone A with a destination to Zone C, the pass holder is traveling in three zones. Or, if an Express ABC pass holder starts travel in A with a destination to Zone D, the pass holder is traveling in four zones. An Upgrade can be purchased at the Light Rail station Ticket Vending Machine.

Riders pay only the difference between a two-zone cash fare and a three-zone cash fare or a three-zone cash fare and a four-cash fare. Both the Upgrade ticket and monthly pass should be shown to the Fare Inspector.
